not only did he steal data for competitors in his last internship….

Valery Martynov was a Soviet KGB officer who became a key figure in Cold War espionage during the 1980s. He was a double agent working for the CIA, providing critical intelligence on KGB operations and Soviet spies. His betrayal of the Soviet Union, however, did not go unnoticed.

Martynov’s Role and Betrayal

Martynov worked within the KGB’s Second Chief Directorate, which was responsible for counterintelligence operations, particularly against the United States. His position gave him insight into Soviet espionage tactics, sleeper agents, and ongoing intelligence operations. His defection to the CIA—whether ideological or opportunistic—allowed U.S. intelligence to gain a crucial upper hand in understanding Soviet espionage efforts.

Unfortunately for Martynov, his espionage career ended due to one of the most infamous betrayals in CIA history—Aldrich Ames. Ames, a high-ranking CIA officer, became a mole for the KGB, selling the identities of numerous American informants within Soviet intelligence in exchange for large sums of money. Martynov was among those exposed.

Martynov’s Fate

In 1985, after being identified by Ames, Martynov was arrested by Soviet authorities. He was reportedly executed for his espionage activities, though the exact details of his death remain unclear. His downfall was part of a massive purge of CIA assets within the USSR, leading to multiple arrests and executions of American informants.
